What is Radon?
Our Radon Mitigation Process
Step 1
Our process begins with a radon test in your home to check for elevated levels or we will review the current test results you may already have and verify that there is in fact a radon issue in your home.
Step 2
Following a Radon Test we will assess your home and develop a customized, mitigation plan to reduce your Radon levels.
Step 3
We will install a radon mitigation system in your home and review the system with you to make sure you are familiar with operating and maintenance procedures. A follow up radon test is recommended to verify that the radon levels have been reduced. We offer this at a discounted rate for all of our mitigation installs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are radon levels often higher in the Black Hills area?
Radon levels are often higher in the Black Hills because of the region’s unique geology. The granite and uranium-rich rock found throughout the Black Hills naturally produce more radon gas as they break down. This gas can move through the soil and enter homes through cracks, gaps, and openings in the foundation.
How often should I test?
Repeat testing every 5 years even if levels are low, since radon can fluctuate due to weather, seasons, or home changes. You should test within 2 years or less if you have higher radon levels.
What do my radon tests mean?
The average indoor radon level in South Dakota is approximately 9.8 pCi/L, more than twice the EPA action threshold of 4 pCi/L. Many homes in South Dakota have significantly higher readings. Because of this, experts in South Dakota recommend treating anything above the outdoor average (~0.4 pCi/L) as potentially elevated, given the widespread occurrence.
How long does a radon test take?
In South Dakota, the most common method is a 2–4 day continuous monitor test, which gives an accurate snapshot of your home’s radon levels under “closed house” conditions.
